KWETHU! HERITAGE TOURISM INITIATIVE

Since the dawn of democracy, the tourism industry has focused primarily on two things in selling holidays to KwaZulu-Natal: the natural landscape and African culture, and battle fields. African communities have been involved in tourism however, their “identity” as tourist attractions rather than tourism managers has to some extent marginalised them from the control of their own cultural expression. Heritage tourism has the potential to help develop both rural and township tourism at the same able   and facilitate shared dialogues around issues and challenges related to oral history, local history, and heritage site preservation.

Elevating Cultural Heritage Tourism for Inclusive Local Economic Development

  • In pursuit of our Kwethu goal, our overarching objective is to seamlessly intertwine cultural heritage tourism with local economic development, ensuring a pervasive impact across all strata of society.
  • This strategic endeavor seeks to not only showcase and celebrate cultural heritage but also to leverage its potential as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between heritage tourism and local economies, our aim is to create a tapestry of experiences that resonates with diverse segments of society.
  • Through this integrated approach, we aspire to unlock the economic potential embedded in cultural heritage, making it accessible and enriching for everyone. Kwethu’s goal is not merely to promote tourism but to catalyze a dynamic nexus that fosters community empowerment, economic inclusivity, and a profound appreciation for our shared cultural legacy.

The desired effects for the campaign over the years are to:

    • Establish (educational) formats engage and disseminating content to communities in vernacular languages that are underserved.
    • Create a central platform to share information about local history and cultural tourism for the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
    • Establish new digital services, such as podcasts, to increase awareness among young people and tour guides in particular of the KwaZulu-Natal historiography and cultural tourism.
